To Himself

To Himself (A se stesso)

Now be for ever still,
Weary my heart. For the last cheat is dead,
I thought eternal. Dead. For us, I know
Not only the dear hope
Of being deluded gone, but the desire.
Rest still for ever. You
Have beaten long enough. And to no purpose
Were all your stirrings; earth not worth your sighs.
Boredom and bitterness
Is life; and the rest, nothing; the world is dirt.
Lie quiet now. Despair
For the last time. Fate granted to our kind
Only to die. And now you may despise
Yourself, nature, the brute
Power which, hidden, ordains the common doom,
And all the immeasurable emptiness of things.

    1. Really, Anthony? It's my favourite translation! All the others I've seen soften the sentiments somewhat. This one has the harsh syntax and brutal rhythm that conveys the message perfectly, in my opinion. (I should add that my Italian is basic and self-taught, so I may well be talking through my arse trumpet.)

  2. Leopardi was awesome although he was a tad too optimistic for me in his other writings.

  4. The monumentally bleak and penetrating ZIBALDONE is going to be an awesome contribution to the cause of Anglophone pessimism:

So some breeder nut killed up to 18 children + adults. Hilarious. All those twitter feeds of the parents that escaped is nauseating. Rest In Peace children, i think the only good thing coming from this is you won't continue the vicious cycle. Yay.

Well it's not a breeder but a teacher's son! And the score is 29 including 22 children! Now that's what i call a real efilist. He stopped the breeding at the core with no bullshit videos but swift actions. Hear hear.

    3. Obama weeps for the massacre lmao. This happens everyday you just don't see it. School massacres should happen daily so the point gest across but dumb humans will keep procreating. Fuck em, die you bastards die.

    4. No sympathy for the parents, hope they sufficate on their grief and kill themselves, we don't want them procreating again. Adam Lanza, you mentally unstable bastard, at least you went out efiliststyle

  6. I want to say the ultimate NO to life and blow my brains out. Which I would gladly do, but out of anguish and respect for tortured animals I refuse to free myself, because they do not have any such option of release.

  7. I think that you did stunning when you picked out this theme of the blog article here. Do you as a rule create your posts by yourself or you have a partner or even a helper?

  8. I'm appaled and disgusted by the comments about the Newtown, CT shooting. This is not a good thing, especially given a whole community is in anguish. Antinatalists should be working to mitigate against suffering, not celebrating it (speaking as someone who volunteers at a local food bank). All we can do is not reproduce, make our case for not reproducing, and working to alleviate suffering as best we can, even if we can only do so on a small scale. We're supposed to be taking the noble way out, remember - NOT cheering catastrophe.

All those children that died will not reproduce. Which is the bigger evil? Dead children (which happens everyday) or centuries of spawn continuing the curse? Suffering with purpose or pointless suffering? The guy killed children, yes it's horrible but you can find something positive in it. Misanthrope ANs are on our team they just want to see hell on earth before oblivion.

Alleviating suffering is great but attacking the root of the problem is better (bang bang baby).

    2. The bigger evil is murdering others! Why? Because murder, suicide, and even accidental death are much more traumatic for surviving family and friends than is natural death, or even death from a heroic sacrifice (saving others' lives, combat death, etc).

Also, forcing people violates their free will and thus causes suffering. Ethical issues aside, forcing it is simply poor strategy and tactics. That will simply close others minds to what we have to say - especially if the stereotype of AN's really gains a solid foothold in the mainstream population. Back to ethics - the ethical thing to do is simply make our case and get others to see the light; anything more is tyranny, which is something I definitely do not want to be part of. We must get people to stop reproducing by voluntary, peaceful means - otherwise we end up creating even more suffering than before (and likely a counter-reaction of increased reproduction besides, given the way human nature works)

"you can find something positive in it"

Yep, and Stalin did, technologically/economically for Russia in 12 years what took W. Europe nearly a century to accomplish. The process is at least as important as the desired end result, and many (including me) would argue that the process is even more important.

As for the future. I accept that we will never completely succeed, regardless of tactics. The best we can hope for is to persuade more people through courteous yet firm case-making and hope for the best for that individual. "For those who have ears to hear, let them hear".

    3. There is far more potential in pursuing transhumanism than antinatalism. Why? Because its easier to convince people to forego their humanity and become a cyborg or upload their minds as well as convince them of the need for a post-scarcity society than it is to convince them of antinatalism.

Even though they reject both, its easier to buy them with optimism than pessimism which they never buy anyways.

  9. Anyone who thinks shooting people is the answer is clearly off the rails. As Filrabat said, AN is about alleviating suffering, not causing it. It's also a perfectly clear and rational philosophy based on compassion for others. Cheering mass shootings only allows AN's opponents to write it off as a crank 'cult'. Please bear this in mind.

Why? It fixes the problem. Those bullets did more than ego inmendham vids ever did.

      Being passive is even worse.

Who cares what the opponents think of us? They already see us as a cult, whiny,whatever..http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=249448 (supposedly a skeptic forum)

    2. I got to say that despite the fact that its horrendous that these kids were killed and that's something antinatalism would never condone, I can see where Anonymous is coming from.

By dying horrifically early on, they will never replicate and thus there is no one to convince of becoming an antinatalist since they're all essentially dead.

I know its a horrible way to look at things, but the truth is that dead people don't reproduce and antinatalism goals are realized for these people who could potentially spawn kids of their own.

In terms of how antinatalism is perceived as a whole.. I don't think inmendham's videos were doing much of anything to begin with and people will most likely always reject such extreme rational logic against procreation.

Its with extreme sadness that I convey the message that violence, as always gets the job done faster than anything else :(

    3. My reply to Raise the Black Flag applies to DIMA SOKOL as well. Furthermore, put in deference to DIMA's view, if we are destined to fail, then let's fail in ways that does not create real suffering in others. Better to fail fighting honorably than to win through cruelty!

    4. I'd rather win than fail at all. Recently, I realized that I can only convince myself not to procreate and that life is shit and the majority of others (even those who suffer) would rather keep suffering and breeding others. There is really not much we can do.

  11. This Christmas I reflect upon the fact that the greatest gift to give anyone is to not bring them into this world. This guarentees that they will never suffer and never experience torture. Christians celebrate the "gift" of the birth of Jesus. From Jesus' perspective his life on earth was no gift but only a horror. Antinatalism is the best gift of all.
